To begin with, an engine is the heart of an automobile. This metal constructed block works on energy generation (converts fuel energy to mechanical energy) principle of combustion.
This works on the two stroke principle of internal combustion engines. The two stroke type of IC engine is typically used in utility & recreational applications which require relatively small, inexpensive & mechanically simple motors like two wheelers, lawn and garden equipment, jet skis. The basic drawbacks of two stroke engines include more noise pollution, lower fuel efficiency and high pollution rate.
The four-stroke auto engine is the most commonly used for automotive and industrial purpose like cars, trucks, generators etc. The first (downward) stroke of the piston, fuel-air is drawn into the cylinder. The following (upward) stroke compresses the fuel-air mixture which is then ignited; expanding exhaust gasses then force the piston downward for the third stroke and then the fourth the final (upward) stroke evacuates the spent exhaust gases from cylinder.The four stroke engine is more efficient than the two stroke, but requires considerably more manufacturing expertise.
This is a revised version of the two-stroke auto engine. The strokes are so adjusted to cause less friction between the piston and cylinder walls. The fuel efficiency is pretty better as well. Due to a higher expansion ratio, the Bourke Engine is able to make optimum usage of the combustion heat produced during the storkes.
